Equine Sports Massage

I trained as an equine bodyworker (EBW) through Equinenergy. This was an intensive course involving over 40 hours pre-course homestudy, followed by a 9 day -hands on learning- internship at Writtle College, Essex. Then, the externship. This involved a gait analysis portion with write up, 20 case studies and their evaluation, and the labelling of horses with the muscles and their functions, photographed as evidence and the submission of a DVD of my performing an entire sports massage for detailed marking and critique and finally...I passed! Although this course was challenging and intense, I was glad to undergo the training which in the end is best for the horses and practitioner alike and sure to give owners peace of mind. I am committed to continued study and improvement, the horses always come first!

So....What are the benefits of a sports massage for your horse? (please get vet's permission prior to my visit and allow 80 minutes total for the appointment. Initial consultation appointment takes a little  longer due to a gait evaluation prior to the massage itself. This massage covers the entire horse and includes head and neck and correct appendage stretches)

  • Increases Range Of Motion so your horse moves in a longer, more Efficient Stride. With more efficiency there is less wear and tear on the joints, ligaments and tendons so there is a longer performance life.
  • With better range of motion, stamina and disposition, the Gait has an improved quality too
  • Can relieve boredom for stall bound horses
  • Rehabilitation from Injury giving comfort to muscle injuries, after the appropriate required healing time and working with your vet
  • With massage, Scar Tissue is encouraged to lie down in better formation, when scar tissue is reduced the muscle will return to better returning function
  • Can be useful in highlighting subtle 'hidden' areas of Pain or Discomfort previously undetected
  • Increases the general wellbeing of your horse which can help Improve Behaviour (Behaviour issues are often linked to pain)
  • Decreases the Tactile Defense of some Horses with these issues
  • Helps to keep quality of Muscle Tone great for the Older or stall bound horse (helps combats muscle atrophy)
  • Can be a great one-off treat for your horse or as a regular part of your horses essential Care Programme
  • Improves Circulation and therefore Concentration, Coat appearance and also Detoxes the body (eliminates waste product)

Does your horse:

Refuse jumps? feel defensive when touched? Drop poles? Dislike Backing up? Does not track up? Have a change in character? Change in his eating or sleeping habits? Not able to work up or down inclines? Not able to execute lateral work? Work with his quarters in or out?...These can be a signs of muscular pain which needs addressing!

How often should I get my horse massaged?

This really depends on the horse, their work level, health, extent of an injury etc,..
As a rough guideline, I would recommend

  • Typical Horse ridden 3 to 5 times a week - a massage every 4 weeks
  • Retired Horse used for pleasure - a massage every 4 to 6 weeks
  • Competition Horse meeting strenuous demand - a massage every 2 weeks
  • Injured Horse - as directed by the vet

Prices:

Equine Sports Massage per individual session - cost £25 (plus travel charge)
For 3 or more horses at the same yard - £20 per horse (plus travel charge - travel charge shared by all participants)
A course of 3 sports massages for Your Horse - £65 (plus travel charge x3) Total payable on the initial appointment please.

What Horses Can Benefit From Reiki?

Any horse can benefit from Reiki! I am insured to work on all types from Competition horses to Children's ponies. Horses are sensitive creatures and can feel Reiki flowing and have an understanding that it will help them. Most are accepting of it and take what they need then will move away.

Reiki itself is the channelling of positive, healing energy through a qualified practitioner into the horse. The healing energy flows into the horse through the practitioner's hands to the areas where it is needed. There are no needles or pressure used, just the lightest touch yet it is a powerful, natural way of kick starting your horse's own body to self heal. (Please Read the Testimonials from some of my clients at the bottom of the page to see what Reiki can do!)

What Can Reiki Really Do For My Horse?

Reiki really works! Reiki is an ancient healing therapy that can help accelerate healing on cuts and sores. It can aid recovery from an operation and ease muscle tension and strains including back pain and disease . As well as the physical, Reiki can ease the mind of troubled horses or sad horses. Reiki can improve performance by allowing the horse to overcome past trauma and events which may be holding it back in present day; you may notice that your horse is napping or crib biting or is aggressive. These things can be overcome. The immune system is also given a vital boost and accident prone horses can become more balanced in themselves.

Let Reiki help and see how your horse improves!

Some owners request Reiki for their horse if they have just changed yards or owners to help the transition period or to help heal a depressed horse if they have been separated from their stable mate.

PinkLights Mobile Service

What Will Happen During The Reiki Treatment?

Firstly I will ask the Owner to complete a medical questionnaire about the horse and discuss any areas of concern you may have about the horse's wellbeing whether physical or behavioral. Vet's permission must also be gained before the day of the Reiki Treatment. This is not usually an issue or time consuming.

I will ask the Owner to be present throughout the treatment, either holding your horse by a leadrope or having him tied up. Working outside is best or in the stable is fine. The more peaceful and uninterrupted the environment the better. I will then introduce myself quietly to the horse and begin the treatment.

Some horses will lick my hand as the energy flows. They can feel sensations such as the energy coming through in waves or tingling. The energy has a peaceful and calming effect on the animal and some may fall asleep, lick and chew and generally relax. Using a light touch I move my hands over the main energy centres in the body in turn. If I pick up any areas on the horse I feel need more work then I will also concentrate on these.

Initial treatment including consultation lasts about an hour and a half. Further treatments last about an hour each session.

What Happens After The Reiki?

Horses will need to relax and be left to recover. Keep an eye on your horse. Reiki cannot harm, but your horse may feel tired after the treatment and you should not ride him for at least 5 hours afterward. Your horse may drink more water and may pass wind or more stools than usual. This is quite normal, Reiki has a way of detoxifying the body and getting rid of what it does not need.

Will I Need To Book Further Treatments?

This is entirely left up to you and how you feel your horse is improving. Some horses who do not have serious problems may need one treatment every so often for a 'pick me up', other horses recovering from operations or with more ongoing behavioral issues for example would require a course of treatment. I may recommend a course of 3 treatments a week or two apart for example with a review at the end to see what changes have been made in your horse and how your horse has improved so far. We can then asses together if further Reiki sessions are needed or not.

What Is The Cost Of The Treatment?

Initial treatment £30 To include:

  • Full Consultation
  • Roughly One Hour Reiki Treatment
  • After Care Advice
  • Session Notes emailed to you within 48 Hours of Treatment. This is particularly useful for courses of treatments where you can see clearly the progress made by your horse over time and you don't forget what has been said or happened during each session

Further treatments £25 per session.

Horse and Rider Package (same day): Why not book yourself a Reiki treatment too? I am fully mobile and equipped with Reiki bench. Try a wonderful Reiki treatment and discover why your horse loves Reiki so much! Receive your one hour treatment for only £20.

Fair Travel charge may apply please email/call me for quotation

Ghost in 2007

'After buying a horse who was very poor, headshy and had a number of hang ups, I saw Sarah advertised and thought I may as well give it a go! Not sure what to expect, it certainly did surprise me when I received the email following the ession. I was advised to buy some crystals for Ghost, which I did and communicate more among other things. Always one for following something through, I did exactly as was advised and within a month, noticed a huge change in the horse both physically and mentally. He had chilled and had started to put weight on. That was October 2007. I had reason to contact Sarah again for another horse in June 2008. I sent her some of the recent photos from a large show. Sarah was amazed at the change in him. His weight has blossomed and he has a cocky air to him now which was lacking before. No longer is he headshy (we haven't done anything special either) and his competition record has boosted. We are now competing him at County level which we would have laughed at this time last year.

Sarah also did a distance session on my partner just before a major show as he suffers with showring nerves. All I can say about that is he was certainly more relaxed and we didn't fall out at all throughout the day - something which usually happened due to nerves and stress. We had a fantastic day.

....and this is Ghost today!

I have recommended Sarah to a friend who also thinks as positively about Sarah as I do and will continue to do so. To see her work with horses is fantastic and they just seem to settle with her. She is highly professional and very easy to communicate with. I thoroughly recommend Sarah to anyone, for both horses and humans.'

Casper TestimonialHorse; Casper
14 ½ yo ID x TB x Connemara (gelding)
Has been home bred and broken. Schooled and competed up to Novice level Dressage by owner, breeder and rider.

Casper suffered from a huge trauma when I lost my young mare in May 2007.They had been together for 4 years.
He became unrideable, unco-operative, overly reactive, nervous and finally dangerous.

He was not able to be tied up or to be shod without sedation as he had trampled me and put me in casualty. This was not the horse I had brought up and something needed to be done.

I enforced more routine and sought veterinary help. He had blood tests and sedatives .I was faced with giving him a time limit if he was showing no sign of improvement then I had to think about putting him down. What sort of life was he having if he was so stressed all the time?

I then decided there had to be another alternative as I wasn’t prepared to give up on him after 14 years I felt he deserved another chance…. but not with drugs .So I opted for ‘alternative therapy’ and decided that Reiki was worth a shot…I web searched and spoke to people that had experienced the therapy themselves…

When it came for his first session I wasn’t sure what to expect. …But there was something happening he appeared so ‘angry’ and wasn’t willing to ‘discuss’ anything. But Sarah persevered with it and he had treatments every 2nd weekend for about 6 weeks until we had a break thru ….He fell asleep at the end of the session. Meanwhile his whole demeanour had changed, his affectionate nature was returning, he was becoming more attentive with his groundwork and less worried by day-to-day life. His appetite improved and his eyes softened.
Everyone noticed the difference on the yard…

Just recently after his 5th session he has actually laid down in his stable overnight and slept, on two consecutive nights. This is something he hasn’t done for 4 years and I am thrilled with him being so relaxed again.

I have also had a session of Reiki and have felt more positive more lively and much clearer thinking so I am very hopeful for Caspers’ progress in the future.
Many thanks to Sarah and her skills we are both very grateful.

Henry Testimonial

''To Whom it may concern,

I witnessed Sarah treating her sister's horse 'William' on my yard. I must state that I was very sceptical of all the claims made about 'Reiki' that I have read about prior to meeting Sarah.

I have a 16.3 hand, Irish draught whom has suffered from a stiffness in his back for some time and so i asked her to look at him for me, without saying anything about his problem. Sarah ran her hands just above his back and I must confess Henry appeared to guide her to this stiff area. Once Sarah reached the area, Henry appeared to relax and nearly went to sleep, as if to say 'yes, that's it'. I placed my hands on the opposite side of Henry's neck, to Sarah, and could feel what I can only describe as an energy radiating through him and into me. ( I also suffer from back problems)

Sarah has since treated Henry on two further occassions, from which he has definitely benefitted. She has turned me from a sceptic into a believer.

I find Sarah to be cheerfull and easy going in personality and very informative about what she is doing and the results she produces. I have gone so far as to tell friends about the benefits I believe 'Henry' has gained from the treatment and I would unreservedly recomend her to anyone.''

Alice Testimonial''Sarah has helped both me and my horse Alice with reki treatments. sarah helped me regain my strength and energy by giving me a reki treatment when i was going through a difficult time.
Sarah has helped my horse Alice, and without her I doubt we would be making the progress we are today.

Alice came to me in a sorry state as Alice is an ex race horse who has been neglected. I knew she had some injuries yet with Sarah's help I was made aware of things vets hadn't picked up on. the one that really stands out was that Alice's feet hurt! as they were bruised.

Sarah also helped Alice settle in her new home and understand I wasn't going to hurt her.
After each treatment (Alice has had three) Alice is very calm and incredibly receptive to anything i try to teach her and our bond strengthens I almost feel her thoughts for those wonderful days after each treatment!

Sarah most recently saw Alice after we moved yards, Alice was so so stressed she was box walking, not eating, going insane if she couldn't see me. I rang Sarah and she came and gave Alice a treatment. Afterwards my beautiful mare was relaxed, munching hay with a look of total happiness about her. Sarah was able to tell me Alice was frightened of the new and strange noises in the night and so hadn't slept, Sarah told Alice was safe. Then we left her for the night.

I returned the next morning to find my cheeky mare back. She hadn't box walked, had eaten her tea and had even slept laying down and practically skipped to her field!

I can't thank Sarah enough for how she has and continues to help us. If I had to say in one sentence what makes Sarah so good it would be that not only is she an amazing person she also has a real passion for horses that would put all horse owners at ease.''

Hannah, Fleckney

''Testimonial for Reiki treatment on my horse, William

William has responded well to Reiki during our sessions with Sarah.
I've been impressed by Sarah's approach to him and by his responses. He can sometimes be wary and nervous which I suspect is due to ill treatment in the past. After the sessions he appears more relaxed and has gradually become more confident and at ease with his surroundings. He enjoys Reiki with Sarah and will stand quietly and drop off to sleep. Also I have noticed he feels freer through his back and generally moves better.
The sessions have also been very informative and I have become much more attuned to the slightest changes in his emotion and behaviour and although I feel I am a sensitive owner I feel I have gained more harmony and empathy with William as a result of this experience which I would term as an 'eye opener'.
On one occasion Sarah told me she thought William needed his teeth rasping on the right hand side and I was quite surprised as he had only had them rasped five months previous. However on the strength of what she said I booked the vet to do them and indeed they needed doing exactly as Sarah described.
I am very grateful to Sarah for all she has done for us and I fully intend to ask her to treat William in the future.''

Angela, Baddesley Ensor.

Many Thanks to Hannah & Ali , Ann & Henry, Zoe & Casper, Ginnie & Billy for their contribution to this website. Special Thanks to Angela and William for your support and belief in me.
